Residential fires are interesting, because the cause of the fire directly impacts the survival rate. For instance, according to FEMA, cooking was the primary cause of only 6.6% of fatal residential fires. However, it was the primary cause of 33.7% of fires that resulted in injuries. This may be because when the fire starts as a result of cooking, there is someone there to immediately call for help. Therefore, first responders are able to get on the scene faster, and less likely to result in loss of life. Overall, cooking is the most common cause of residential fires, with all other causes significantly less common.
Smoking is another cause of residential fires but is significantly less common than cooking. Smoking is the primary cause in only 2.1% of all fires, however it is the primary cause in 14.2% of fatal fires, and 6.7% of fires that resulted in injuries. This may be due to people falling asleep with a lit cigarette, or not fully extinguishing them before disposing of them. However infrequent fires caused by smoking may be, they are more deadly than other fires. In fact, the only residential fire deadlier than ones caused by smoking are those caused by unintentional carelessness (17.5%).
Here is a list of other common causes of residential fires, courtesy of FEMA:
-Unintentional careless 6.6%
-Electrical malfunction 6.5%
-Open flame 4.3%
-Other heat 3.3%
-Equipment malfunction 1.8%
-Cause under investigation 1.4%
-Other equipment 1.2%
-Playing with heat source 0.4%
Residential fires accounted for 3,280 deaths in 2015. There were over 15 thousand injuries. As devastating as a residential fire can be, the loss can be mitigated.
